Steps to Take Before You Finish a Basement

Basement Remodel By Ivy Lea ConstructionFinishing a basement is a great way to add a new, cozy living area to your home. But because they’re located below grade, basement renovations require a little extra planning and consideration. Before you start hanging drywall, take the following steps to make sure your basement is ready to be transformed into a livable space.

Consider the Floor Plan

Natural lighting is at a premium in basements, so use windows wisely. If you’re planning on adding a bedroom to your basement, it will need a window for egress to be in compliance with building codes. Keep an eye out for load bearing support beams under floor joists as well. Chances are you won’t be able to move these beams, but they can be concealed later on with sheetrock.

Resolve Moisture Issues

Because they’re located underground, basements are prone to moisture intrusions. Check for moisture buildup by taping 2-foot squares of plastic sheeting to the floors and walls of your basement. Check back over the course of the next week, preferably during a rainy period. If you see moisture building up on top of the plastic, then your basement will need a humidifier. If you see condensation underneath the plastic, then your foundation will need to be sealed before you finish the basement.

In addition to your primary sump pump, you should also invest in a water-powered backup pump that’s fueled by your water supply line. Be sure to install a battery backup on your primary pump as well for when the power goes out.

Check the Ventilation

Carbon monoxide is another concern for finished basements. Hire a professional to inspect your furnace and ventilation system to make sure it’s safe and fully functional. Test your carbon monoxide detector and install fresh batteries to make sure it’s working properly as well.
