Choosing a Color for Your Roof Shingles

Choosing A Color For Your Roof ShinglesIf you’ve been shopping around for a new roof, chances are you’ve already noticed that these days you can get shingles in just about every color of the rainbow. Much like choosing a new paint color for your living room, choosing a shingle color for your roof can feel pretty overwhelming at first. By taking a few different elements of your home into consideration, however, you can make the decision-making process a little easier. Let’s start with your climate.

Be Temperature-Conscious

Different shingle colors have different properties when it comes to heat retention. In especially hot climates, you’re typically better of choosing a light-colored shingle which will reflect sunlight and keep your home cool in the summer. Here in Western New York, darker-colored shingles can help to insulate homes during cold winters and melt snow and ice on roofs. Choosing a climate-appropriate shingle color can prevent your energy bills from spiking in extreme temperatures.

Coordinate Contrast

Rather than choosing a shingle which perfectly matches the siding or masonry on your home, you’re consider choosing a different color that contrasts nicely with the other colors in your home’s color palette. Installing dark gray shingles on a house with white siding, for example, can make for a clean, traditional look. High-contrast colors can also highlight different features of your home and add depth to its aesthetic design. If your home’s exterior is already bright and vibrant, on the other hand, you might choose to offset it with a more understated neutral tone for your shingles.

Consider Resale Value

A bold green roof might look great to you, but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re replacing your roof with the intent of putting your home in the market, you’re probably better of choosing more conventional shingle colors such as grays, browns or black.
